Tips for a Healthier Halloween

Canva Design DAFMbnbYW4UWhether you’re taking the kids out trick or treating, handing out candy at home, or attending an adults only party yourself, Halloween is one of those holidays filled with fun, festivities, and also sugar filled treats.  Stay on track to meet your health and wellness goals with these tips.

Eat a balanced breakfast- eating breakfast gets your day started off on the right foot stabilizing blood sugar and replenishing glycogen stores.  Here are a couple of filling ideas:

Bagel Gone Bananas

Greek Yogurt with Apple and Walnuts

Eat a balanced lunch- keep your nutritional fuel tank full and increase your ability to resist tempting treats that you would not normally eat.  Try Chicken Waldorf Salad and Creamy Avocado & White Bean Wrap for filling protein and fiber.

Eat a balanced dinner- since it will most likely be an action packed evening, plan ahead for a hearty, wholesome meal with these delicious slow cooker meals.  You’ll be so satisfied you won’t even want the candy.

Southwestern Three-Bean & Barley Soup

Hungarian Beef Goulash

Pulled Pork with Caramelized Onions

Rich Chicken Stew

Keep up with your usual exercise routine- if you usually hit the gym for a lunch time group fitness class or take an early morning jog, keep that up!  If you’re taking kids out for trick or treating, use that as a perfect opportunity to get your steps in for the day instead of driving them house to house.

Remember, like all holidays, Halloween is just one day.  If you’re hosting a get together or brining a dish to a party, treat yourself to healthier treats and snacks by preparing one of these delicious and nutritious recipes:

Honey- & Goat Cheese-Filled Fig Muffins

Pumpkin Bread

Apple-Cinnamon Mini Doughnuts

Spiced Chickpea "Nuts"

Creamy Spinach Dip

Turkey Cheese Roll-Up
