Meals that Freeze Well

freezer meals

Freezing meals ahead of time is an effective way to save time and money in your meal plan. In addition, cooking at home is budget friendly and much healthier than ordering takeout ore prepared meals. Not sure where to start?

Here are a few of our top tips to help you get going:

What if I don’t have time to cook? One way to achieve this is to double your recipes when you cook - half for dinner tonight and the other half goes in the freezer.

How long will they last? Most meals will last 3-6 months in the freezer. Always label your freezer meals with the date, the number of servings and the description of the food. Label your freezer bag with a permanent marker before adding your meals to prevent smudging.

How should I store my meals? If you are using freezer safe containers, you can label them using freezer safe labels or masking tape. Lay your filled bags flat on a baking sheet to freeze.  Once they are solid, store them in rows to maximize your freezer space.

And here are a few of our favorite freezer-friendly recipes:

Sweet Potato & Black Bean Chili

This kicked up chili will take your lunch to the next level. This plant-based meal is full of fiber and protein to keep you full until dinner. A whole food, plant based diet can help you lose weight and reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Feeling extra spicy? Top with sliced jalapeño peppers.

BBQ Chicken Sandwich

Who doesn’t love a good sandwich? To make this recipe freezer friendly, mix your chicken, carrots, and barbecue sauce in a bowl then store the mixture in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag. This pairs well with a side of coleslaw and is sure to be a hit with the entire family.

sSlow-Cooker Braised Pork with Salsa

Set it and go with this slow-cooker recipe. Using a slow-cooker is a fantastic choice for busy weeknights. This meal can be reheated from frozen in the microwave, oven or on the stove. Serve with a side of rice or quinoa for a protein packed meal.

Eggplant Parmesan

Do you think casseroles are boring? Think again…This whole grain, high fiber dish is flavorful and can help lower your cholesterol. Fiber helps manage weight by keeping you full and promoting healthy digestion.

Whole-Wheat Fusilli with Beef Ragu

Hold the pasta please! Pastas get mushy in the freezer so it’s best to prepare it right before your meal. However, this flavor-packed ragu can be made ahead and frozen. Cook the pasta while the ragu is reheating. This meal is ready to go from the freezer to the table in under 20 minutes.

Salmon Cakes with Olives, Lemon & Dill

Did someone say omega-3’s? These heart healthy salmon cakes can help save your heart and save dinner. Omega-3’s help your body fight inflammation, lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol. Pair these with a side of leafy greens or a seasonal vegetable.

Savory Breakfast Muffins

Do busy mornings have you skipping breakfast? Not anymore! This grab and go breakfast has got you covered. Reheat in 60 seconds and run out the door.
